Honesty is being truthful to others. This should be so important to you as you deal with those you work with...play with...go to church with...live with....do life with. Being truthful means that all of those you come in contact with know beyond a shadow of a doubt that you are a person of your word.
Being an honest person also means you are being truthful with yourself. This may seem like an odd thing to say...but let's think about it for a second. Have you ever known someone that knew that they needed to make changes in their life, yet tried to convince themselves that living a life of lies and deceit was not going to harm them? This is being dishonest with yourself! You need to face what's going on in your life and make the changes that are needed to get back on the right track...quit lying to yourself...you are supposed to love yourself...remember? Do that by being honest with your situation and ask for help if you need it.
Honesty is doing what's right regardless of who's around. I think most of us thought that when we left Junior High School we left peer pressure forever in our past. I have to say that for a lot of folks... they've let peer pressure follow them into adulthood. Doing what's right is not always a comfortable thing to accomplish especially when everyone around you seem to be throwing caution to the wind. We need to grow up and be someone that leads others with positive peer pressure...be an honest leader who leads , not a follower who quickly follows negative behavior.
Honesty is also being someone that others can trust. Just as we trust our doctor to be honest with us about our health...we should live our lives in such a way that others trust that we are always going to be truthful. How awful to be admitted to the hospital and not trust those that are caring for you. In the same way, how sad for friends to come to your home and not have the assurance that your relationship is based on honesty. I think Thomas Jefferson had it right when he said..."Honesty is the first chapter in the book of wisdom."
