Wow! What if you have asked the person you hurt for forgiveness, yet they won't forgive you? That is probably one of the most difficult situations to be in. Below are 4 things that I want you to consider as you think about why this person has tightened up their fist instead of opening it up to receive your apology.
1.) Were you sincere when you asked for their forgiveness? Sometimes it is just too easy to say, "I'm sorry". Have you ever heard someone say, "It's just easier to ask for forgiveness than permission?" I'd venture to say that person will not be too genuine when they render that request later. They've decided ahead of time that they are quite possibly going to offend, yet they do it anyway.
2.) Did you go on the offensive as you apologized? In other words, did you say "I'm sorry, but..." (you fill in the blank) There are no buts about it...you are the one that did the hurting...you are basically asking a favor from someone you have hurt. Put yourself in their place...would you forgive you in the same scenario? It's kind of like your momma taught ya...put yourself in their shoes.
3.) Did you try to blame it on someone else? Most of you are probably too young to remember Flip Wilson...he used to say "The devil made me do it"...well there is some truth to that, but guess what...you need to quick blaming and start owning up.
4.) Are you continually asking for forgiveness because you keep doing the same thing over and over? How in the world do you expect someone to forgive you if you keep doing the same thing ... after a while you lose your genuineness to them...they no longer can trust that you mean what you are saying.
After all of this, you may be saying...well dang! I guess the situation is just hopeless. No sweet friends...it is not! Tomorrow I will give you some things to do to stay in that place of forgiveness...even if the other person will not forgive.
Happy 1st day of February,
